Observation Task 2:

Teaching a Phonics Lesson

Reflection

1. What program is used in your school to teach phonics?

The teacher used many different of program such as:

2.How is phonics taught in your school?

The teacher teach the children one letter a week and the called is synthetic approach. According to this approach, sounds are divided into groups which means that students learn a number of letters in certain time. After learning these letters, students are asked and encouraged to form and blend words that include these letters. Using this approach helps students blending words gradually. It also helps teachers checking students' knowledge about the taught sounds. Also, it can develop their abilities and their cognitive skills by using this approach. This style of phonics instruction benefits both students with learning disabilities and low achieving students who are not disabled.

 3. What was the focus of the lesson?

The teacher focus with letter "W" because it is a new letter for the children.

4. Were the learners engaged in the phonics lesson?  If they were, select (a); if they were not, select (b).

a.  Describe the different types of active engagement activities that the teacher used.

In the focus group, the children have different puzzles

"pictures with words" and they will try to solve the puzzle

and then they will reads and write the words in the paper. 

  • Mastery students: they will solve all puzzles by

       themselves, and they will read and write the words.     

  • Developing students: they will solve all puzzles

       by themselves, and they will read and write the words

       by some help from the teacher.

  • Emerging students: they will solve all puzzles by

       themselves, but they couldn’t read and write the words.​

 

b.  What active engagement activities could the teacher have used to help learners better understand the lesson?

The activity is, when the teacher shows the children the letter Ww and I will let them to practice with me how they pronounce the Ww letter and the sound of this letter. Then I will choose one girl and one boy to find the whale who have the word start with W letter by search around the class.

5. What types of activities did the children participate in during their independent centers that reinforced the lesson objective/learning outcome? If they participated in learning centers, select (a); if they did not, select (b)

a. Describe the different types of learning center activities that the students did.

Make a watermelon activity:

In this activity, children make a watermelon by using the half of paper plat. Then, they color it and they will post the small black dots. After that they write W letter in the back of the paper plat.

 

 

b. Describe two (2) learning center activities that the teacher could have used to help reinforce the learning outcome.
